Artemis III: NASA’s Best Plan Yet for the 2028 Moon Landing

Artemis III was supposed to be the mission that put boots back on the Moon. It will not be — and the reason says a lot about where American spaceflight actually stands in 2026.

NASA has restructured its lunar plan. Artemis III is now a test flight, and the first crewed landing has slipped to a later mission entirely.

What Artemis III Was Originally Supposed to Be

The original plan was straightforward and historic: launch four astronauts on Orion, rendezvous with a commercial lander in lunar orbit, and put two of them on the lunar south pole.

It would have been the first human Moon landing since Apollo 17 in 1972. That is no longer the mission profile.

The New Artemis III Plan: A Docking Test in Earth Orbit

In February, NASA announced it was scrapping the landing objective for Artemis III and replacing it with an orbital demonstration.

Under the revised plan, expected to launch in late 2027, the Orion crew capsule will attempt to dock with one or both of the candidate landing vehicles — Blue Origin’s Blue Moon lander and SpaceX’s Starship.

Crucially, that test happens in Earth orbit rather than around the Moon.

Why the Change Makes Engineering Sense

Neither lander has ever performed a crewed docking. Both are enormous, complex vehicles that require in-space refueling to reach the Moon at all.

Testing that rendezvous close to home means an abort is survivable. Testing it for the first time at 240,000 miles means it is not.

Artemis III, in its new form, is the rehearsal that de-risks everything after it.

So When Do Humans Actually Land?

Artemis IV now carries the landing. The plan targets late 2028 for astronauts to touch down near the lunar south pole, using Orion paired with one of the privately developed Human Landing System vehicles.

The south pole matters because of water ice in permanently shadowed craters — the resource that makes a sustained lunar presence plausible rather than symbolic.

The Honest Read on That Timeline

Artemis landing dates have moved repeatedly. The target has shifted from 2024 to 2025 to 2026 to 2027, and now 2028.

The pacing constraint is not Orion or the SLS rocket. It is the landers, and specifically the orbital refueling both designs depend on — a capability nobody has demonstrated at the required scale.

Treat 2028 as an optimistic target, not a promise.

What Artemis II Already Proved

The restructuring is not a sign the program is failing. Artemis II went extremely well.

It launched April 1, 2026, on a roughly ten-day voyage around the Moon — the first crewed flight of Orion. Astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, joined by CSA astronaut Jeremy Hansen, splashed down April 10 in the Pacific off San Diego.

Key results from that flight:

  • The crew reached 252,756 miles from Earth — the greatest distance humans have ever traveled
  • Orion’s life support systems were tested with people aboard for the first time
  • The crew included the first woman, first person of color, and first Canadian to travel beyond low Earth orbit
  • Heat shield performance on lunar-velocity reentry was validated with a crew aboard

Orion works. That was the question Artemis II existed to answer, and it answered it.

The Real Bottleneck: Landers

Understanding Artemis III requires understanding the architecture.

NASA does not build the lander. It buys the service from SpaceX and Blue Origin, both of which are developing vehicles far larger than anything Apollo used.

Starship in particular needs multiple tanker flights to fuel a single lunar mission. Blue Moon has its own refueling requirements.

Until cryogenic propellant transfer in orbit is routine, no Artemis landing date is firm. That single technology gates the entire program.

The disappointment is real — another delay in a program full of them. But Artemis II proved the hard part of getting humans to the Moon and back safely.

What remains is proving we can land. That answer now comes in 2028, and Artemis III is how we get there.
